    Bottom-up design of artificial neural network for single-lead electrocardiogram beat and rhythm classification

    Performance improvement in computerized Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification is vital to improve reliability in this life-saving technology. The non-linearly overlapping nature of the ECG classification task prevents the statistical and the syntactic procedures from reaching the maximum performance. A new approach, a neural network-based classification scheme, has been implemented in clinical ECG problems with much success. The focus, however, has been on narrow clinical problem domains and the implementations lacked engineering precision. An optimal utilization of frequency information was missing. This dissertation attempts to improve the accuracy of neural network-based single-lead (lead-II) ECG beat and rhythm classification. A bottom-up approach defined in terms of perfecting individual sub-systems to improve the over all system performance is used. Sub-systems include pre-processing, QRS detection and fiducial point estimations, feature calculations, and pattern classification. Inaccuracies in time-domain fiducial point estimations are overcome with the derivation of features in the frequency domain. Feature extraction in frequency domain is based on a spectral estimation technique (combination of simulation and subtraction of a normal beat). Auto-regressive spectral estimation methods yield a highly sensitive spectrum, providing several local features with information on beat classes like flutter, fibrillation, and noise. A total of 27 features, including 16 in time domain and 11 in frequency domain are calculated. The entire data and problem are divided into four major groups, each group with inter-related beat classes. Classification of each group into related sub-classes is performed using smaller feed-forward neural networks. Input feature sub-set and the structure of each network are optimized using an iterative process. Optimal implementations of feed-forward neural networks provide high accuracy in beat classification. Associated neural networks are used for the more deterministic rhythm-classification task. An accuracy of more than 85% is achieved for all 13 classes included in this study. The system shows a graceful degradation in performance with increasing noise, as a result of the noise consideration in the design of every sub-system. Results indicate a neural network-based bottom-up design of single-lead ECG classification is able to provide very high accuracy, even in the presence of noise, flutter, and fibrillation

    Sparse and Specific Coding during Information Transmission between Co-cultured Dentate Gyrus and CA3 Hippocampal Networks

    To better understand encoding and decoding of stimulus information in two specific hippocampal sub-regions, we isolated and co-cultured rat primary dentate gyrus (DG) and CA3 neurons within a two-chamber device with axonal connectivity via micro-tunnels. We tested the hypothesis that, in these engineered networks, decoding performance of stimulus site information would be more accurate when stimuli and information flow occur in anatomically correct feed-forward DG to CA3 vs. CA3 back to DG. In particular, we characterized the neural code of these sub-regions by measuring sparseness and uniqueness of the responses evoked by specific paired-pulse stimuli. We used the evoked responses in CA3 to decode the stimulation sites in DG (and vice-versa) by means of learning algorithms for classification (support vector machine, SVM). The device was placed over an 8 × 8 grid of extracellular electrodes (micro-electrode array, MEA) in order to provide a platform for monitoring development, self-organization, and improved access to stimulation and recording at multiple sites. The micro-tunnels were designed with dimensions 3 × 10 × 400 μm allowing axonal growth but not migration of cell bodies and long enough to exclude traversal by dendrites. Paired-pulse stimulation (inter-pulse interval 50 ms) was applied at 22 different sites and repeated 25 times in each chamber for each sub-region to evoke time-locked activity. DG-DG and CA3-CA3 networks were used as controls. Stimulation in DG drove signals through the axons in the tunnels to activate a relatively small set of specific electrodes in CA3 (sparse code). CA3-CA3 and DG-DG controls were less sparse in coding than CA3 in DG-CA3 networks. Using all target electrodes with the three highest spike rates (14%), the evoked responses in CA3 specified each stimulation site in DG with optimum uniqueness of 64%. Finally, by SVM learning, these evoked responses in CA3 correctly decoded the stimulation sites in DG for 43% of the trials, significantly higher than the reverse, i.e., how well-recording in DG could predict the stimulation site in CA3. In conclusion, our co-cultured model for the in vivo DG-CA3 hippocampal network showed sparse and specific responses in CA3, selectively evoked by each stimulation site in DG

    Moment redistribution in continuous FRP reinforced concrete beams

    yesThe main purpose of this paper is to assess moment redistribution in continuous concrete beams reinforced with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. A numerical technique based on equilibrium of forces and full compatibility of strains has been developed to evaluate the moment–curvature relationships and moment capacities of FRP and steel reinforced concrete sections. Moment redistribution has then been assessed by comparing elastic and experimental moments at failure, and moment capacity at critical sections of continuous FRP reinforced concrete beams reported on the literature. The curvature of under reinforced FRP sections was large at FRP rupture but failure was sudden, that would not allow any moment redistribution. On the other hand, FRP over reinforced sections experienced higher curvature at failure than steel over reinforced sections owing to the lower FRP modulus of elasticity. Although the experimental and elastic bending moment distributions at failure are significantly different for many beams tested elsewhere, in particular CFRP reinforced concrete beams, the experimental bending moment over the middle support at failure was far lower than the corresponding moment capacity owing to the de-bonding of FRP bars from concrete in the middle support region. Furthermore, the hogging moment redistribution over the middle support is always larger than that at mid-span by around 66%. It was also shown that the load capacity prediction of continuous FRP reinforced concrete beams using the de-bonding moment at the middle support section was the closest to the experimental failure load
